Captain Smith

Staffordshire

Lichfield - a three spired stroll

One of England's smallest (and loveliest) cities nestles in the countryside of Southern Staffordshire. Lichfield, a centre of Christianity for more than 1,000 years, is home to the only three-spired mediaeval Cathedral in England, as well as being the birthplace of lexicographer (and harmless drudge!) Doctor Samuel Johnson.

A walk around Lichfield also uncovers scenic pools, tales of the Civil War and even - so far from the sea! - a link with the famous R.M.S. Titanic!

Tamworth - a Capital tour

Once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia, Tamworth has more than a few surprises up its sleeve. Vikings, an Anglo-Saxon Queen, Sir Walter Scott and even Sir Robert Peel have put in appearances on Tamworth's past and this is a walk which links sites associated with them all around a town whose mediaeval castle still gives it one of the best skylines in the Midlands.

Burton-on-Trent - a tour that's no small beer!

Mention Burton and people immediately think of beer. But there's more to the town than that in a surprisingly large "spread out" town. We discover not only why Burton beers are renowned the world over but also hear tales involving misbehaving Monks, Charlie Chaplin, an "almost cathedral" and how the good brewers of Burton taught their London counterparts a thing or two.

Stafford - getting knotted!

A river crossing place fortified against the Danes which grew up to become a county town and which has managed to retain many old buildings (including the largest half-timbered town house in England).  Saxon Saints, Queen Elizabeth I, a Lord Mayor of London, Charles Dickens and even Hinge & Bracket manage to get a look in!
