Shropshire
Shrewsbury - a walk through time
This is one very special town, certainly one of the most beautiful in
England and a true mediaeval gem, famed for its associations with Brother
Cadfael, Clive of India, Charles Darwin…….and Michael Palin!
Enclosed by a loop on the River Severn, Shrewsbury boasts several
mediaeval churches, lots of "black & white" architecture and
more than a few surprises just waiting to be discovered.
Shrewsbury - Ghostly & Grisly
They say that Shropshire is the most haunted county in England, so its
no surprise to find that its county town has more than a few unexplained
stories to tell.
So take heart and follow this mysterious trail passing tales of fire
victims, cruel masters and the dark, mysterious River Severn. And how many
towns have a haunted railway station?!
You might be ready for a stiff drink afterwards!
Ludlow - Black & White masterpiece of the Midlands
The Shropshire market town of Ludlow boasts more than 400 listed
buildings as well as a ruined mediaeval castle, a famous poet and one of
Britain's loveliest streets! A famous Prince lived (and died) here,
altering the course of England's history, while the Blue Remembered Hills
of poet A.E. Houseman are clearly visible (depending on the weather!).
Ludlow is also now developing something of a reputation as the best
place to eat in Britain outside London. The three Michelin-starred
restaurants and celebrity chefs attribute their success to the supply of
good local produce and the survival of independent butchers and bakers.
Bridgnorth - two towns in one
A really unusual town not yet discovered by visitors from further
afield, although Midlanders have appreciated in for generations,
Bridgnorth is sited magnificently on two levels overlooking the River
Severn. "High Town" and "Low Town" are connected by winding
lanes and narrow streets as well as by an unusual "Cliff
Railway".
Bridgnorth - Ghostly and Grisly
Bridgnorth by daylight is enchanting. But after dark the town takes on
a whole new perspective. As night falls we go in search of Bridgnorth's
unexplained side. A white lady, a ghostly girl and an ill-fated king are
all still reputed to make their presences felt, so wrap up warm and come
armed with an open mind, a sense of adventure and maybe a clove of garlic!
Much Wenlock - an Olympic tale
Overlooked by so many visitors on their way to somewhere else, Much
Wenlock, clustered around the remains of a once-proud Abbey, is one of
Shropshire's most charming small towns. A stroll through the centuries,
with tales of Abbots, merchants…….and - yes - the Olympic Games!
