Gloucestershire
Cheltenham - secrets of a Spa town
Most people think of Cheltenham as a genteel spa town on the edge of
the Cotswolds, brimming with listed buildings, cast and wrought iron
decoration and a stylish shopping centre to boot. But there's much more to it than that, including the secrets of GCHQ,
Gustave Holst and Eddie the Eagle! And what other spa town had its mineral
waters discovered by pigeons?!
Gloucester - from Romans to riggers
Gloucester, founded by the Romans, is one of England's hidden gems. The
city's Historic Docks (where the classic TV series "The Onedin
Line" was filmed) with its preserved warehouses, now boasts the
National Waterways Museum and an antiques centre.
The older part of the city is home to the truly remarkable cathedral
(with many Royal Connections) and also has links with the Sunday School
Movement, the American National Anthem and even Harry Potter!
